This weekend I am hanging out at Bar Camp Tampa Bay http://www.barcamptampabay.com and I’ll share some of the goodies that I am developing while listening to all the different speakers. This past week I decided to go forward with development of my first product, a training program geared towards small business owners in which I plan to educate them on the different types of social and new media available to them and more importantly how to apply and integrate it into their business.

I also played with Seesmic desktop (http://seesmic.com) for following my twitter feeds and Facebook feeds. What I liked about the application is that it allows you to follow your fan pages also. In my case I can set the desktop to follow my personal fan page for my real estate business, or one of the business groups that I participate in. I also like Tweetdeck http://www.tweetdeck.com/beta/ a lot. I haven’t decided which one I will use regularly as I am looking to see which one is stronger. Either one makes filtering your Facebook feed much easier.

New Seesmic desktop

I just downloaded and installed the new Seesmic desktop which works for Facebook and Twitter, it lets you follow your FB fan pages easily while getting your friends update feeds, and you can follow your twitter feed. This is a great tool for monitoring multiple fan page campaigns. http://seesmic.com/

Some Do’s and Don’t of social media

These are just some of the do’s and don’ts of social networking websites.

  1. Do Jump in the pool – just do it, get your profile up on as many social networking sites as you care to.
  2. Do Observe rules and etiquette – you’re new in the pool, watch and see what the norm is. You would not go to hang out with a group of people that you barely know, and make the assumption that it is ok to “get crazy”, you watch the others and see how the others act, and you use that to decide what is acceptable with the group.
  3. Don’t forget to be secure with your information, look into the privacy settings of the related sites and who you are sharing your information with. Don’t live in fear, but use good sense about what information to share. Sites like Facebook allow you to dictate how your information is shared.
  4. Do Begin interacting – search for friends, join groups, slowly!!! Set a commitment to check online regularly, once a day (like e-mail) is the minimum, don’t panic, this could be just a quick minute or two to see if anyone is posting you any notes, so that you can respond if necessary in a timely manner.
  5. Do Enjoy the party – but consider how you attract attention to yourself, have fun but remember everyone is watching. If you feel the need to share political or religious views, keep in mind that everyone will see that, and consider how it might affect how people look at you.
  6. Do Make connections – interact with others and share. The larger your sphere of influence becomes, the greater your reach and potential benefits from the social interaction with others.
  7. Maintain top of Mind awareness – when they think ______________ are they thinking of you? Ease your business into your messages. You do not want to turn people off with blatant commercials, instead entice them to ask questions or comment on your posts by bringing in relevant topics that they will find interesting. i.e. As a Realtor, I sometimes mention when I have a sale or I’ll post a real estate article that I think others might find interesting. If you do it with the intention of educating your friends, rather than selling them, they will more likely remember you and your business.

Birth of an idea and a company

I have recently been obsessed with the growing popularity of Social Media, and even more so by the lack of effort on so many peoples part to leverage this valuable medium. In the last week I have sat on a panel as an expert on social media and attended a presentation by another panel on the same.

Let’s take a step back to who I am, I am Antony Francis, a REALTOR in the Tampa bay area.  I am actually a born again Realtor, as I re-entered the business as a Realtor, after getting laid off from Realtor.com, where I worked for 4 years as their National Speaker, and Sales Trainer. I have had some unique experiences running companies and with some upper level positions, but had not completed my degree until this year, almost 19 years later. My degree is in Organizational Innovations which lead me to look at social media in a different fashion then many others. I witnessed first what a disruptive innovation internet marketing was to the newspaper industry and see social media as an even bigger step in the evolution of how we do business.

Lately I have been obsessed with starting a company to train others in the use of social media in their business and to offer levels of assistance from coaching all the way to doing everything for you. This blog is the evolution of that idea from thoughts to practice, individual to company and lastly the birth of something excellent.
